hello everyone....I am an upcoming law enforcement officer in north carolina. I am scheduled to begin training this summer. interestingly enough, back at the beginning of the year I broke up with my ex, and she took it upon herself to retaliate by going downtown and telling the cops that I "broke into her residence" and "struck" her, all of which was fabricated information. I was arrested within hours and was in shock when the cops told me the allegations....and no one wanted to hear a word that I had to say, let alone see the evidence/witnesses that knew the truth. either way, over the following months I went to court and all that fun stuff and surely enough, once my evidence was presented, the case was thrown out and I was free to go without question. the ex also tried to drop her claims before the court date, and did not even come to the court hearing either. in the end, I was cleared of all accusations and my record has also been expunged. what I'm still weiry about is first of all, how long does it take for an "expunction" to actually go through? in addition, even though I was proven innocent of this ordeal, will the stigma of it being a "domestic" issue still hinder me when it comes to the hiring process in law enforcement agencies? maybe I'm a little over zealous....but this has been my planned profession since child hood, and my "ex" knew this....and she tried her best to have it ripped away from me for no good reason. has anyone been through a similar ordeal? and is it going to be an issue at all when it comes to background checks and so on? I'd appreciate your feedback.

YOU MAY WANT TO CONSULT WITH AN ATTORNEY, AND ALSO IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO, GET A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT. AN ARREST STAYS WITH YOU BECAUSE AN ARREST IS NOT A CONVICTION BUT IT DOES HAMPER YOU.

don't be afraid to list the arrest(most applications will ask what happened and disposition)make sure you serve that "ex" with a restraining order also(don't think-DO !),with apologies to our female viewers, an old training officer said to us that " booze, broads, and bills" will always do an officer in-now adays its past drug use,bad relations, whether male/female,credit problems, criminal records, work history. If gaining the job in law enforcement is what you want, then cut the "dead weight"-its harsh, but necessary.Good luck, and sorry about the tough scrape(have all documents from the court available to you when you/ if you are questioned about it.Like uhuru said, check with a criminal atty- see about having the arrest suppressed or removed by the court....

I appreciate the feedback guys. as I mentioned before, I was cleared of everything and the record (a misdemeanor "assault on a female charge") was expunged. I'm just more or less worried about the "stigma" of me being male, and I have already had to deal with many false assumptions in the community here...and it's a drag. and by the way...I had already pursued taking out a restraining order on the ex....that's what prompted her to retaliate and have me falsely arrested! anyhow, I won't spat out the whole story (I know my attorney would be pissed that I'm writing about it in this forum!), but I just wanted to see what other people in the law enforcement community had to say about it. anyhow, as of right now, I'll be reporting to a training pre-orientation next month, and then we actually start our training academy in july....so I'm looking forward to getting through it. and it's so true guys....a woman (or man for that matter) can screw your career in the snap of a finger. it's amazing that such actions can take away your means of making a living.....even worse, it's amazing that someone would even have the audacity to try and purposely screw you to begin with. if anyone else here has "people problems" do your best to put a stop to it before someone uses the system to cheat you. it's a degrading thing to go though, for sure. but my aim right now is to succeed, and I'll keep you guys posted as future events take place.
-good day
