I was wondering how much size really matters if you want to be a cop? I'm an 18 year old female. I'm only 4 foot 11 inches and 104 pounds. Quite small. What I lack in size I make up for in intelligence. I currently have a 3.5 GPA. So are there any guidelines for hieght/wieght?

littlechristylu--Depends upon the agency and what they require in the job description. Most agencies require that an applicant be capable of performing all of the "essential functions" of the job. So height/weight requirements MAY not be an issue but it MAY depend upon WHO yo apply with and what their standards or requirements may be.
In short, I have actually seen a male officer smaller than you working at a large municipal agency. Female officers are in big demand. Sure, your size may be a disadvantage for you at times in the field but, keep in mind, that you'll likely be taught effective defensive tactics in the academy. AND, a lot of agencies or schools out there do offer special training specifically for female officers too.
Standards in this area differ fro one department to the next. They're not all the same. I would check with the local PD recruiter if you have additional quesitons about this issue.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that here in Canada, one of my friends is 4 foot 11 and a half and she is now a constable with the RCMP. So like Charlie said, unless a certain agency requires a specific height/weight restriction, you would have no problem based on your height/weight. Now on the other hand, I'm a 5 foot 2 female and I am also in the application process with the RCMP. The only challenge for me is the physical PARE test . . .the push/pull exercise to be specific. When you are only 118 pounds (my weight) and you are pushing and pulling 70 pounds, that requires that you must have good strength and endurance because your body weight is an actual disadvantage. But keep your head up, call the agencies that you are interested in and ask questions and remember that you can obtain anything if you are determined! Good luck Ace13

just one caveat-FBI statistics bear out an ugly reality-smaller statured officers are frequently the victims of assault by suspects and assailants. If you do decide to join an agency, closely study and pay attention to all tactical training provided-it will always help you in the field-there's no such thing as a "tie" or "second place winners" in this field...good luck.

Size doesn't matter anymore as long as you can pass the departments physical agilty test. But I will say this that being a martial artist and training with the guys that train police agencies. Stay effective keep your training in the area of defensive tactics honed. Dynamite comes in small packages.....
