I've been considering a career change for some time now. I have worked the last 6 years as an aircraft mechanic. I spent almost 2 years in the navy and part of my duties was being a part of the security response team. I really enjoyed being a part of that team. We would respond armed and in force if there was a security threat on board. I've got tons of questions like is the danger really worth it? Do you get the satisfaction in helping people? Is dealing with people's attitudes and garbage counter acted by other good things? Any input, positive or negative would be greatly appreciated as I'm seriously investigating this possibility.

Question- what do YOU want out of life?I assume that since you posted on this site, then being in law enforcement is more than a passing notion to you. I'm sure that being in the Navy taight you the reality of dealing iwth different personalities, working through stressful, tedious conditions and a plethora of rules that seemed sometimes to hamper as much as they helped.Does aircraft servicing satisfy you?does it pay and provide the lifestyle you are satisfied with? remember that there is no "nirvana" in any work field, and as I've experienced it,"pushing a blk and wht" can grind on you like anyother job. Most men and women that enter into this field are usually "take charge" type people-not bullies or braggards, but people who don't really like to sit back and wait for things to happen or change-if this is your personality, then go for it.Expect sacrifice(the 1st 3-5 yrs is the time frame in which rookie officers mature and begin to feel comfortable in what they do; it is also the toughest time as processing for the job, the academy, field probationary training accounts for almost 2 1/2 yrs of that time, and YES-your life changes almost 180 degrees....A candid contact with any of your local agency(ies) recruiters will answer the question for you.As for me, I love it and the experiences you'll have run the spectrum of emotions.Good luck in your decision....

XtremeDBF--Some of the answers to your questions lies within you. You know yourself best.....I/we can only express our opinions as to what WE think about in reference to your questions. ;D * Is the danger really worth it? -- I suppose that depends upon the situation. In reality of course, I know that I am paid to "take risks." It is an inherited characterisitc of the job my friend. The same question would apply to your profession being in the Navy. There are certain inherited risks that go with the job. So, why did YOU decide to do YOUR job? I think there are similar answers. 8) * Do you get the satisfaction in helping people? -- Yeah I do. I like to help folks out and I like to think at times I canmake a difference for some people. That comes from within you. * Is dealing with people's attitudes and garbage counter acted by other good things? -- Hey we're human like anyone else. At times, we all get fed up with someone's crap or dealing with the scumbags on the streets. Sure, the good qualities or good things that happen can at times counter act some of the negatives one can deal with as a cop. I think you have to decide for yourself if this is what you want to do. As suggested by Cpl. Mike, you perhaps need to contact some PD recruiters and have some discussions with them. If I might add, there are a lot fo agencies out there that have web sites. Typically, a lot of them also have recruiting & contact information. Everything you need to know. I would also encourage, if you have the time to do it, to participate in a ride-a-long program with a local PD or Sheriff. Then, you can get a better idea of what it's all about out there up close and personal. Just my thoughts..... Charlie
