I have always wanted to be a police officer. I have been talking it over with my wife she does not know if she wants me to do it. I have a job making 75,000 a year. I would have to quite and start making 40,000 my first year. Is there anyone out there that has or will be switching careers do this. Any advice.

hey, Well to be honest right up front I have never made that much money. I guess you need to ask yourself how much you really need. What elese is in the equation. (kids, bills etc.) If you think you can make it on that much less then go for it. Remember " nothing ventured- nothing gained" . There is alot to even just starting a career in L.E. There is school, training, start up cost. Do your homework on how much time and money it will take, then make the informed decision.
I don't know how old you are, but sometimes time is of the essence. I had a coach tell me once that someday I would have to decide if I wanted to make alot of money, or do what I wanted to do.
I am also in somewhat of the same situation you are in. Wife, kids and all. I started doing reserve work. This is a good way to get a taste of L.E. without completely turning your life upside down , just to find out that you really don't like it. You could work weekends or nights. They are usually willing to work around your "day job" schedule.
Just my thoughts- hope they help you with your decision.

I think T. Cote has offered some good advice. If income is an issue (we all have bills to pay!) then doing the reserve gig might be the way to go for you! ;D Especially since you and the better half seem to have uncertain feelings about making the major career change anyways. Besides, I think the reserves would enable you to more-a-less "try it before you buy it" or, in other words, this should give you a good taste of what it's all about before throwing yourself into it and making a living at it. From what you've described, that sounds like a significant pay cut. BUT, I don't know how financially well off you are either. A lot to think about but if I were in your shoes, I think I would seriously consider the reserve police officer option. Charlie
