As you all can see I am a new member. I found this site by luck and it has been a such a good source of information.
Should I apply with the perspective department as a trainee, or should I put myself through school first then apply holding a P.O.S.T. certificate?
I am 29 years old and have a few dings I would like to remove off of my credit report. My feelings are I can take care of these while I was in school and let some time pass prior to my application.
During my research, I have seen postings for both P.O.S.T holding applicants and trainees alike.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of going to school first?
Thanking you in advance. Jim

Jim--Allow me to offer my thoughts:
* First of all, you need to figure out WHAT KIND of department are you trying to get into? i.e.: Large department or small?
- Large departments may require that you attend THEIR academy even if you already have a P.O.S.T. certification. Why? Usually it's because they want to make sure you know what you need to know and, that you learn to do things their way.
- Small departments often like applicants with prior certification primarily because it saves them money. Often times, sending someone through an academy is an expense smaller agencies cannot afford.
* Your credit report issue is perhaps a minor thing. Being in debt is not an illegal thing. Most cops I know (myself included) are typically not financially well-off. But, credit is often looked at concerning a potential applicant as part of their whole package of qualifictions. I think this might be the least of your worries unless you have horrible credit or something like that.
* Advantages or disadvantages - Well, again, it depends upon what your goals are. on one hand, if you have your heart set to work for a large department that likely requires that you attend their academy, then why bother going through the time and expense of going through an academy somewhere else? On the other hand, you may be more attractive to a smaller agency being P.O.S.T. certified. It might give you a few extra points as an applicant depending upon where you apply but remember it will not guarenty you'll be hired simply because you have your certification.
* In my opinion, what is important these days are college credits or degrees. Now, if you go back to school to help get yourself some additional credits or a degree (preferred), then my vote is go back to school first for this purpose.
Depending upon where you are applying, it is often a competitive process to get on board somewhere. Often times, education can be a significant factor and might possibly help you edge someone out of a position. Even if a given agency advertises only a high school diploma is required. Don't be fooled by that alone! Education folks, is an important thing. My recommendation to anyone is get some schooling under your belt.
Otherwise, hope this helps. Just my view of things.
