rachel--A good question and I don't ever recall anyone else asking anything similar before! ;D You have to keep in mind that (Assuming you're only talking about the U.S.) most states have some sort of government entity that oversees or makes up all of the minimal standards that all "peace officers" (law enforcement officers) must meet in order to be bonafide law officers. That is, these officers have the authority to perform all the legal arrests, search, seizures, etc. in that state. BUT, the standards, qualifictions, rules, regulations often differ from one state or another. You may have some states that have similar standards and then there are some that may have some vast differences! Example: You might be fully a fully qualified peace officer in one state but, if you move to another state and want to be a peace officer in another state, it is very likely you have to: * Meet all qualifications and standards required of all officers in any state in question. This likely includes things like: background checks, written exams, pychological testing and screening, physical fitness testing, physical examinations, etc. Remember not all standards are automatically universal no matter where you go. There's no national license or anything like that. * Some of you previous academy training that you received in one state MAY possibly transfer to another state. * You MAY have to attend some sort of state-approved police training academy even if you have been previously through an academy somewhere else! BUT, keep in mind it will depend upon the agency you make an application with. Again, standards and qualifications differ depending upon where you go. So, bottom line, it is likely you'll have to test, attend schools or academies in just about any state you move to. Good luck and hope this helps in some way. Perhaps you can put off your ambitions until hubby retires or gets out of the Navy??? Charlie

I would also take into account the matter of openings within the new departments/states you move to. If they don't have an opening I think the chances of them making one for you regardless of prior LE experience might be slim if they aren't already filling positions. During your application process your spouces career will be brought up and if the original hiring police force knows of your need to move every three years they may not put the time and effort into hiring and training you in the first place. Have you considered the Military Police? I think they would be more condusive to transfering you with your husband and finding you a new posting when you have to move. Also, once your husband settles down in one spot later in his carreer it would be easier for you to make the transition into a local non-military police force.
