Just joined the message board...great source of information!! I will be turning 30 soon and have aspirations to be a full time police officer. I am in the early stages of the hiring process for a major city police dept. in Ohio. I received a questionaire from them to fill out in regards to background information. There is one question that I feel may haunt me and that is "Have you ever engaged in any illlegal sexual activities?" Well......I was in the military for 4 years and I've had encounters at brothels and massage parlors. I've also had a couple encounters with female escorts after I left the military. Will this hurt my chances and automatically DQ me??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks!!!

wahoo57--A tough question.....I have never served in the military but I do know a lot of military service personnel have participated in this kind of activity for a number of reasons. I think it would be safe to say as well that a lot of departments are aware of this fact and how it may apply to military personnel wishing to pursue a career in law enforcement. I think one of the issues that may come under question concerning this activity as well is: Was it legal or illegal wherever you were stationed? I often say this but it will overall depend upon the agency you've applied with and how they'll view your particular situation. I think all you can do is be honest and upfront about everything and go from there. Obviously, if you are deceptive and it is discovered you are deceptive about this situation (or any others information/activity for that matter), you will most likely be eliminated from further consideration. Again, it's a tough dilema....how do you respond? What do you say with regard to this issue (or others)? I think that one positive for you may be the passage of time concerning this activity. If it's been a few years or more since you last participated in this kind of activity, it might be in your favor. I wish I had a better answer for you but I don't. I would say it is possible to get hired but again, it will depend upon the department, overall circumstances surrounding this past activity as well as your overall qualifications. I am aware of some cops who have been involved in similar activity in the past and they are working at a PD. ;D One thing that is a plus in your favor with a lot of bigger departments across the country is they are in dire need of cops. Hence, the "forgiveness" factor may be more in your favor if you're upfront and honest. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you but it's how I see it. Someone else on this board, maybe Cpl. Mike or someone else may have a better "feel" on this than me. ;D Charlie
