Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone could give some advice on how they maintain a healthy family life, despite the many constraints and pressures that LEO's face?(i.e., shifts, long hours, weekends, holidays, etc.)

hey, First off are you a cop or cop2be? My only point is that preperation to these events is a great help. I talk to my wife frequently about my schedule so there are no suprises when I have to work. This keeps her feeling like she is involved. When ever I am scheduled to work a difficult shift for us I mention it way in advance. I also have a 5 year old son and a baby on the way any day now. My son loves saying that his daddy is a policeman. I think that helps when I am not around, when I 'm not there he just tells his friends that I am at work and what I do. He usually gets them believing that cops are pretty cool too. ( what a perk huh!!)
I realize that if it is a sensative subject that it is tough to talk about. But I really think that is the only way.
Sleep can be tough to fit in too. To be honest you just get used to being a little tired most of the time. This is another area where if the wife and kids are totally on board with the idea of you being a cop it helps. If they know that daddy is tired and needs his sleep they will let you. If they are upset you were gone, but your home now , they will wake you up.
There are no great answers. There are definitly pros and cons to this job. You need to weigh them out on your own.
My wife was not always on board with the idea of me being a cop. But now that she sees how happy I am at my job, she thinks the "cons" are worth it.
Just my thoughts, Hope they help.

Hello T.Cote, I'm a cop2be. However, I'm currently an elementary teacher, and although my wife states that she wants me to pursue my dream of becoming a cop, I doubt she knows the rigors of this career; especially since we have a 4 week daughter and she has become accustomed to the vast amount of time a get to be around her. Yet your optimism and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks! V. Hopper

I just told my wife that there is so much opportunity to make money in LE that she wouldn't have to ever go back to work.
She seemed to like that idea ;D
