I am currently in the hiring process for the Sumter PD in SC. I have completed all phases of the hiring process except the oral interview board. I know most of the officers in the city because I am the loss prevention manager at a local dept. store. Everybody tells me that I have nothing to worry about and that I will get hired. I am a little worried about the oral interview board because I am not very good at talking in front of people especially when I am trying to get hired to do a job that I have wanted since I was 14. Could anybody please give me some ideas to stay calm and relaxed during the interview board. I thought the stress waiting to take the polygraph was bad but this board is worse. Somebody Help!!! Thanks

Dear Future;
The thing to remember during an oral interview is that the Board is trying to build a list of potential officers, the bigger the list, the longer the time until they have to do it again, and believe me, it is a pain running a hiring cycle.
So unless you are totally off the wall, things should go OK for you, they expect to see some nervous candidates, in fact it was the "Cool" candidates that I worried about when I was interviewing candidates.
The Board wants you to do well, they are not "out to get you", so just be yourself, dress well, be clean, and say "Yes sir", "no sir" or "mam" if necessary. If you don't understand a question, ask for a repeat.
Good luck. JimCMR

Thanks for the support. I hope everything goes well. This is the last step in the process except for the physical given by the doctor. One thing that really is weird is that before I started the process of hiring I was not worried but after every test I take I get more nervous. Guess it is normal. Will let yall know how things come out.

future, i totally agree with jim. you will be fine, before you answer each question, pause for a moment and then give your reply. i was a public relations major in college, one of my public speaking professors always reminded us that it is ok to feel nervous before speaking in front of a group. and that if you don't feel a little nervous, then you probably aren't human. good luck and keep us posted . junior 8)

Future. Just a quick little tip. Try video taping yourself in a mock interview. Have a family member or close friend, (wife?), be the board with the camera facing you. Then you can watch it to see for yourself how you are in an interview. Then you can improve where you need to be. Or try it in front of the mirror. I purchased a book on winning the interview. But it is basically common scense, but it helped me to be aware of the things what not to do and to do. Just a suggestion eh!
Until next time, keep your stick on the ice. Glenn 8)

Just an update. I had my interview board this morning. The recruiter told me I did really well and can expect to be called to take my physical in the next few days. She said as long as I pass the physical, I will get hired. Also, I don't turn 21 until April 16th so they are going to hold me a spot. The questions they asked on the board were very easy. I worried alot more than I should have. It was a very informal process. There was only 3 supervisors and the recruiter on it. They were all just sitting around a little table and I came in and sat down. It was actually kind of fun now that I think about it. Thanks for the help and I will keep yall posted on the next thing: THE ACADEMY.
