Hello. First post here. Hope you can help. I had my first oral board a couple weeks ago and things went well. I do have a question about something though. About half way through the interview the police chief got up and left the room. He did this when I was answering a question. I didn't really think anything of it when it happened, and I continued to answer the question that had been asked. He came back in the room a couple minutes later. Afterwards I thought about it and came to the conclusion that there was a purpose behind this, and that they were testing me somehow. Does anyone know the logic behind doing this, and how would I best have handled it? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

You might be reading too much into it or maybe not...
Personally I would have asked the rest of the panel if I should continue or wait for him to return.

Hey, Personally I have been to alot of oral boards and I have never had the chief in attendance. I think you might be reading too much into the situation also. The chief usually is just going to go with what the others on the board think. In my experience that is why he/she isn't usually there. He may have remembered something he needed to do or just hit the head. If it was a test I think you did the right thing. Continuing on , keeping your composure and showing that you can keep going when some variable is thrown into the equation, are all important factors in L.E.
Keep us posted on your progress.

;DNot to worry his beeper or his cell phone probaly vibrated while you were in your orals. You realize of course that the chief of police still has functions while he is in there with you. Something of importance probaly came up. I wouldn't worry about it. Good Luck K.U.P.

I too concur with my esteemed colleague's responses. Chief's usuually have other "Chiefly" related duties. My bet is the silent pager thing or something like that. I would not worry about it.
