Hey guys, I have a question for the officers out there who might be reading this. Does job experience related to police work make a candidate more appealing to a department? I'm thinking of security guards, corrections officers, that sort of thing. I'm not sure I want to do any of those jobs, but I get the feeling I'll need every advantage I can get.
Thanks for any input!

lich--I think most departments look at your overall qualifications which includes, obviously, prior employment. If one has been previously employed in law enforcement-related field, it will generally depend upon where one worked? What kind of position, and for how long? Depending upon those factors, prior LE experience, depending upon the agency and position one is applying for, MAY be of some benefit in helping you get your foot in the door. But again, always generally remember: agency qualifications, standards, what they look for? what they prefer/not prefer? what they look for/not look for? This can vary greatly depending upon the department. Some departments do put a lot of value into prior LE-related experience but usually this must be from generally a position in some sort of full service LE agency. ;D Without a doubt, and depending upon WHERE you decide to pursue a LE career, it CAN be a very competitive process. Therefore, you want to put forth the best effort possible to meet or exceed the hiring qualifications, standards and testing process. Usually, hiring qualifcations can easily be obtained from most any LE agency. I'd find out what these standards may be at whatever agency you plan on applying to for employment. It may give you better insight into WHAT they look for. Better yet, if possible, I would talk with any LE officers with the agency(s) your thinking about going to. Most officers will likely provide you with the inside scoop on how to get your foot in the door in terms of what their department may look for in terms of desireable qualities. Nevertheless, best of luck and hope this somehow helps. Charlie
