HELLO TO EVERYONE I AM A BRITISH POLICE OFFICER WITH THE BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE IN LONDON. THIS IS THE SAME AS TRANSIT POLICE. I HAVE BEEN A COP FOR 3 YEARS AND ENJOY WHAT I DO BUT I DON'T ENJOY WHERE! I WANT DESPERATLY TO MOVE PERMANTLY TO THE USA. I LOVE THE USA AND FEEL MORE CONECTED TO IT THAN TO ENGLAND. (WHICH, AS YOU MAY KNOW IS IN VERY BAD SHAPE AND GETTING WORSE). I KNOW THIS SEEMS STRANGE BUT ITS TRUE. I HAVE A BROTHER WHO HAS LIVED IN PORTLAND FOR 1 YEAR (BY MARRAGE) AND HAVE VISITED MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS ANY KNOWLAGE OF LAW ENFORCMENT AGENCIES WHO WOULD CONSIDER SPONERING A UK CITIZEN. OR ANY OTHER WAY (OTHER THAN WAIT FOR MY BROTHER TO BECOME A CITIZEN) TO GET EMPLOYMENT IN THE USA. THANK YOU

If you want a career as a LEO here in Canada or the States you have to have citizenship first. I don't think any department will sponsor you. I tried 6 years ago to apply for the LAPD from Canada and they told me I needed a green card first. I tried applying for my green card and was told it would take approximately 10 years to get. The quickest way for me to get a green card would have been to cross the border, find the nearest bar and ask if any girl there would marry me. That was 6 years so maybe things have changed?

I have to agree with Sporto. All the applications I've ever filled out they require you to have citizenship on or before the first day of the academy. On the other hand can't you go from Britain to Canada without any problems. Not to insult any of our friends. Just wondering

To work for Toronto you have to be a Canadian citizen, I am not sure if you have made them aware that you are not. getting into an agency in Canada or The USA will be almost impossible if you are not a citizen of the country because we already have tons of qualified applicants that are being passed up because there are just no jobs. For instance for the local police department near toronto they get 700 applications per year yet only hire 45 constables. Now throw in that you are from England and the pain in the ass of waiting for you to get to toronto for your interview and ohther stuff such as testing. I would say try to get out of being a transit cop and move on to a police service in England. i to would like to work NYPD or LAPD, but its just not in the cards, I also do not think its fair that they would hire me from canada over a guy who is just as qualified who has grown up in LA. And i know here they dont do that. They would much rather hire a person who had lived in the area.
My 2 cents for what its worth.

From The Toronto Police Service Website
International Applicants
The recent surge in volume and response from interested International applicants considering employment with our Service has overwhelmed the Employment Unit. Unfortunately, much of this can be attributed to media misinformation and rumour.
The Toronto Police Service wants to clarify and ensure that an accurate assessment is stated with respect to our Constable Selection Procedure.
- We are not actively recruiting Internationally. - We have no International opportunities for lateral entry. - We can not influence Canadian Immigration procedure. - We have no affiliation with any Immigration Consultant Organizations.
The Toronto Police Service continually strives to ensure that it represents the richly diverse communities that it serves.
Organizational needs include, and are not limited to, racial minorities, females, Aboriginal people, language skills, residents of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
The majority of International interest has been from highly qualified, experienced and truly motivated Police Officers. The Toronto Police Service would be proud to work with these professionals but regrets, that at this time, the International interest has far surpassed current available employment opportunities.
The Toronto Police Service continues to accept International applications and they will be processed under the same guidelines and standards as normal applications according to organizational needs

greetings!sorry,bud-the green card issue can't be bypassed(unless you try the marriage thing, lololol!).I work in So.Cal (Los Angeles, California) and can tell you that,if desire was any indication of what it takes to make a good cop, i'd recommend most of the folks on this site!!!!!!working in L.A is "rough"(this is the wild west still, and shootings, robberies, narcotics, gangwarfare is common and everyday occurence)Most UK cops are very well trained for their work areas(your agency, the transport police ,has a long and professional history).make sure that this enviroment, whether US or Canada, is really what you want ,'cause when the lights go out here on the west coast(from California to oregon/Washington, and even Brit.Columbia,it can get nasty real fast for a Police officer!.Good luck in your decision......

UKCOP--I think most US agencies will require the US citizenship thing BUT, if you are a non-citizen, there are some agencies out there that require that you have the ability (producing the appropriate documents) to be legally employed in the US.
I don't there are many agencies out there that do this but I know for a fat there are some out there!
