Hi everyone. I am new. I just found your site today. I am seriously considering a career in law enforcement, and have a couple questions about the background check. 1. How inportant is credit? My husband and I have been having some difficult times, due to hour cuts & lay off's. As a result we fell VERY behind in alot of bills. We are worhing to correct this. I am concerned this could look bad, and disqualify me. 2. Why do they want to interview your family/friends?

;D Unfortunately we all have had our moments with credit. You really need to be current with all your bills. Departments take a chose look at your credit to make sure your not unside down in regards to income ratio to debt. We all know the reason behind this. Departments take to your friends and family to get a feel for your character and how you affected them. We realize we don't get along with everyone we meet but if you didn't get along with anyone then it's something that may concern the police department. Part of the requirement is to have a good moral character and they determine this by talking to everyone about you. Good LUck K.U.P.

They take credit ver very seriously. I failed my backround check, because I did not pay a late charge to the video store. When the credit agency called me i payed right away. But they were very judgemental when they asked me why i didnt pay when i didnt pay immediately after returning the video. This was the only thing negative on my credit history as i have never made a late payment on any bill before.
They will want to talk to your family firends to see what kind of person you are, but which is really stupid because its not like your family or friends wil say anything bad about u.
