You got me wiggin out a little bit with this "Background Credit Stuff." I have excellent credit, maybe a tad tad tad more debt in relation to income-but that is because my brother & I recently started our own auto detailing business using ALOT of my available credit. Now...I have my own personal debt but there is no way for someone looking at my credit report to distinguish personal debt from our company they probably have no idea I started! I did mention this to the officers during my oral interview....and now that I think about it one of the officers who sat in on my oral review is my background officer. Should I contact him to see if he needs any explanation about my debt/income relation. Because I am not working the business, my brother is so there is no extra income showing on my behalf (sorry to make this so long).

The backgrounds are only concerned about "unduly" high debt or prior unpaid financial obligations! If you just started a personal business and are making your payments onwhat your liable for(i.e. insurance, creditors, etc) then don't worry about it. When I started I had one previous (30) day late ,but that charge account was paid up and current/active-I was able to explain that I was a student and had changed jobs from a part time priv. industry job to a full time civil service job. When we talk about debt, some people haven't " cleaned up" (paid ) previous charge accounts, have charge offs, numerous late pays ,and without explanation, repos or forclosures.showing personal responsibility is all that an agency can ask.Would you trust someone as a rookie making $45,000/yr with over $500,000 + in debt prior to employment?(sorry, thats what civilian administrators look at) I personally know of officers that can't get coveted narco unit positions due to high home loans and charge accounts( and they are paying their bills). As long as you list all debts/bills and are current, you should do fine...
