Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to steer a question toward those of you who are able to give me a logical answer. Okay, I am an aspiring LEO and I will be graduating from a four-year university in a month or so. I have already begun the process of making contacts and have sent in some applications to various departments; however, my driving record of late is of some concern to me. Let me explain.......I received a violation for moaking an illegal left turn onto a street (I was on an unfamiliar street as if that matters). The judge let me off and I did not have to pay any fines or court costs, but I was placed on probation for 30 days pending that I would not have another problem out on the road during that time. My probationary period ended without any subsequent violations, but only five days later I received another citation for a rolling stop (disregarding a stop sign). This citation will go on my record and blah blah blah. So, how bad will this hurt my chances, and should I even pursue a career in law enforcement. Is my recent neglect, if you will, too damaging toward my chances? Should I give up?
Down, out, and frustrated,
Brandon

Brandon--If this is all you've done that is of concern to you, I'd doubt very seriously this would be something that will permanently disqualify you from most any LEO job. Agencies sometimes greatly differ when it comes to their applicant qualification requirements, application process and hiring process. I don't think think, if this is the worst thing you've done, this wil be much of an issue BUT I would definitely be honest and up front about this information concerning your driving record. One final note, be mindful of the fact that it is common for an applicant, (assuming they don't have any issues that would hinder them from being hired in the first place), to completely apply and process for a department more than once before they are finally hired! I would also select a few departments you really have genuine interest to hired on with. Avoid the common "blanket" approach of applying to every agency under the sun. This is a common mistake! ;D I agree with Charlie just be honest and I don't think you have any problems. However from a departmental point of view. Insurance..... being expensive..... most will only allow you to drive a county or city vehicle with a maximum of three points on you drivers lic. Now getting a ticket from another municipal while being employed with another agency will definately get you chewed out. I realize professional courtesy but there are times when you'll get the ( you should have known better and professional courtesy would dictate you not speed in my area) so relax tell the truth and you'll be fine.

brandon,
If the only skelaton in your closet is traffic I truly wouldn't worry about it. I know of cops,( some have been on this site from time to time,) that had drug problems, and backed child support that still were hired.
If traffic is it, dont swet it .
