Hey everyone. I met the chief of police, a sergeant, and the assistant to the city manager today. The interview was pretty straightfoward with basic questions about law enforcement and my feelings on it, how I would handle myself, and what would be expected of me.
There were no high pressure questions. I think I handled myself pretty well, since the group seemed to enjoy my answers and gave me a few compliments. I feel pretty good about it compared to the last interview I had, where I was made to feel like my answers were incomplete or somehow lacking in depth and insight.
Here's where I think I impressed them: I made it clear I understood the hours would be long and erratic, that weekends were guaranteed and overtime would probably be mandatory. I gave short, direct, confident answers to the questions I was asked, and took complete responsibility for my mistakes/imperfections.
I also did something which may help me move forward in the process. I was given written notice of the date and time of my interview, and was informed of the names of those who would be interviewing me. I took the opportunity to have thank-you letters prewritten and adressed to the panel before I walked in, and dropped them off at the post office right after my interview. This should minimize any delay in receipt of the letters and might just help the panel keep my name in mind as someone who should move forward in the process.
I'll know where I stand within two weeks. Next step: the dreaded physical agility test. This one is different. There are no pushups or situps. It's an obstacle course, with an insane amount of running, climbing, jumping, pushing, dragging, crawling, etc.
I'll begin preparing now. Wish me luck.
