I have a question for all. I am currently enlisted in the USNavy. I have three years to go to retirement and am interested in starting a career in law enforcement. The question I have is about age requirements. I will be 38 when I get out of the Navy. It was a dream of mine to be a State Trooper (anywhere) but that is probably out of the question. I have security experience in the Navy (I am stationed on Nuclear Submarines and we provide our own security force). I am in excellent shape, habitually scoring outstandings and excellents on our Navy Physical Readiness Tests and have a TS clearance. I have taken polygraph exams with Navy and gone through a myriad of pysch evals to be a submariner. With all that in mind what do you folks think my chances are. I would love to be able to serve my country for another 20 years.

I say Go for it! In my friends academy class for Oregon State Troopers the oldest male was 41. Just do some research with the departments you want to work for. Good Luck and thanks for serving your country now and in the future. ;D

100%.
I would strongly encourage you to look at Maine. They absolutly love x-military security and MP. work. They won't have a problem with your age either. You definitly have alot going for you.....go for it!!

Thanks for the input folks. I appreciate it. Its funny that you mention Maine T. Cote, I grew up there. That is probably why I dont want to go back. To dog-gone COLD. I am looking at Ohio. That is where I want to retire. My wife is from there and my family is spread to the four corners of the country. Again, thanks for the input.

I agree that you should go for it. Most LE agencies will have an upper age limit of around 35 or so but will make exceptions for ex-military. They will subtract your years of service from your age up to a certain amount. I remember reading a post on this site from someone who retired from the Army at 40 something and is now working in LE.

Just for your information PA state's max age is application before 41s birthday, and for retirement is 25 years of service is full pension (75% of salary). These are under negoation July 2003 for the new labor contracts so these may change, I don't belive the age requiremtents are being negoiated though. Good luck sir, Im sure you will be an ideal candiadate for any department you choose.

I would rather retire at 20 years and get the reduced retirement than go to 25. Point being I will be 58 or 59 rather than 63 or 65, but, I appreciate any words of wisdom that anyone could swing my way.
