Hey guys! I'm new to the board and was just wondering if anyone can tell me a way to lose loads of weight, in a short amount of time. I currently am a security guard and wanted to apply to the academy. But I need to get in shape. Any suggestions? Started the atkins diet. It's working. But I have massive muscle. Anyway I can tone that down? Appreciate all who apply!

As a female, I think the best way to lose weight is to alternate cardio and weight lifting, not to mention, eating at least 3 meals a day. If you do cardio MWF and do weight training TThS as well as situps, push ups and pull ups I think you'll lose the fat quicker. I don't think by do an atkins diet that it will do much, but who knows. I have read the effects are usually temporary and I'm sure you want long term. Needless to say, if you weight train, it raises your metabolism, and by raising your metabolism, your bound to lose more weight. Just my train of thought, but No pain is No gain. Remember that! Especially in Law Enforcement. Hope this helps a little. Take care and good luck!

You should look for a book entitled Body for Life written by Bill Phillips. It really helped me get into shape and look and feel better as well. The program is not that hard to follow and results and you will notice results after a few weeks. Worth a look at least. Hope this helps.

I've been trying to lose weight sing last May. I saw an ad for a local police department and thought I would apply. I've always dreamed of being a police officer, and decided to give it my best shot. I trained my butt off and I failed the physical. I just didn't have enough time to lose weight and increase my exercise ability.
When I failed, I got pretty depressed and took a few months off from trying to lose weight. Then I saw another advertisement for another department. This one elected not to let me take the physical after having an interview. I'm pretty sure they thought I couldn't pass it. I base that on the interview questions and how they focused on my past failure. I gave up again, and eventually realized I'd never get anywhere if I waited until I saw a posting to try to shape up.
Now I've decided to put some real control on my diet and increase my workouts before applying to another department. I want to be in shape before I have to answer another question about my previous performance.
I just want you to keep in mind it might take more than one try and a whole lot of effort to get through the selection process and get into the academy.
Good luck!

Fitness, health, rock hard abs.. Its a lifestyle. not an overnight thing.. I would hope that when you consider getting fit that its a life long goal and not just "to pass the police physical" If you listen to "people" talk you will hear the typcal comments about cops and donuts and laughing about how it would be easy to out run them. Thats sad You should pride yourself on being life long fit and when you get into your 30's 40's and 50's then you will still be able to catch that teenage thief that is running away from a crime scene... Im not bashing, just my 2 cents Onedaysoon Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.

The way I see it, you should have two focus areas: losing weight and improving muscle tone.
I found that the best way to lose weight is to go on a low calorie diet. Stick to fish and white meat chicken and tofu. Eat loads of veggies, and drink lots of water. Avoid desserts and minimize carbs. For exercising, go for long aerobic exercise. Swimming is great if you can get to a pool regularly
To improve your muscle tone, go for workouts that use lots of reps with lighter weights. Also try a type of exercise where you stress each rep by holding it for 10-15seconds longer than you normally would
I'm not a personal trainer, you might want to check with someone who has some formal training. These are just somethings that worked for me

Thanks to all of you who responded. I want to atleast wait about a year before I apply. So that should give me enough time to start a fitness schedule. Thanks again!

Pecan and anyone else interested,
I suggest not only alternating but actally combining into a circuit training or mini circuit training. I is efficient in the fact it packs max stress on the body in a short perios of time, involved good anaerobic training ( important for a lot law enforcement tests), also it will burn bodyfat and help to shape muscle. I used to pick 2 body parts and then work 4-5 sets of 10 reps or so for 4 excercises, but only have a rest period of 60 seconds or less. As you get more efficient you can reduce the rest periods and increase sets or weight, but maintina the reps. Add in 3 cardios a week and this will work wonders. As well eat more meals, smaller protions. This increases the bodies metabolic rate via digestion processes. Stay away from high glycemic foods (white bread, rice cakes and so on). Those food cause the body to store carbs as fats via insulin increases. The most important thing is setting an obtainable goal and doing what needs to be done to obtain it. How do I know all of these diet and training tips? I am certified as Reebok instructor and a YMCA Strength trainer.
This stuff works, but you need to stay with it and push hard when the going is tuff
