;DIf you guys are here in So.Calif. and want to "have your cake and eat it too", then I suggest the following schools: Rio Hondo Comm.College(home of Rio Hondo Regional Academy) in Whittier, CA. San Bernardino Sheriffs Academy, sponsored through San Bernardino Valley Comm.College District(San Bernardino ,CA). Golden West Comm.college(Golden West Academy),Orange Co. CA.,El Camino College (extended Reserve and A,B,C,D module P.O.S.T training),Palomar Comm.College and Mira Costa Comm. College(Basic and Reserve Academy), San Diego,CA. Each of the above are listed in the phone books you can find in your local library, or they have web sites with details and qualifications(in Calif. if you are putting yourself through a police academy you are still required to meet the same personal/background standards as you would if you were already hired by an agency). Some times having gone on your own to an academy prior to seeking employment can give you a boost up on competition, especially if you are applying for a small, local police agency , and many of CA. PO.S.T training standards meet and exceed those of other states in the U.S.(THE TRUTH!!!!).Also , to jam the age old debate of getting your education before applying, all of the listed Colleges/Academies grant you between 20- 38 units of college credit, toward your associate or bachelors Degree in Admin. Justice, and all you have to do is complete the general electives, such as english/biology/etc( with a little effort and 1 1/2 to 2 yrs effort, you'll have a degree!!).Even LAPD Academy gives 36 college credit units upon graduation from their academy(through L.A. Comm.College District) .These are not give away/back door methods toward getting a degree, and the units are transferable to the Cal.State& Univ.of Calif campuses, as well as many local and regional private colleges. Check into it, 'Nuff said 8)

I am currently finishing my associates degree in Police/Correction Science @ Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac Wisconsin. We also have one of the top two year and recruit schools in the Nation that is located in Appleton Wisconsin and it is called Fox Valley Technical College. This school is rather difficult to get into due to the overwhelming number of students wanting to enrole. They also offer a number of training programs for current police officers. ;D

;)I will be finishing up a two year degree for police science at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. We had classes that were hands on training like shooting handguns, rifles, and shotguns. We even had defensive tactics training. Boy, was I sore for a week. But everything you can think a police officer goes through this school had a class for it. Great school!! Now I am a Police Chief in a small town. Of course I am the only officer in this town.

I just finished up my Master's of Science in Criminal Justice at Niagara University in NY, right on the boarder of Canada and the U.S. They offer an accelerated program where you can get your degree in one year. If you choose not to do that, you can get your Masters in as little as two years. Their classes are all evening with the option of taking two classes in one night. The professors are really cool. ;D

I'm currently a senior in a co-op program between Buena Vista University (home campus is Storm Lake,IA) and Indian Hills Community College (Ottumwa, IA). The co-op is a 4 yr program that gives you a BA in political science and a minor in psychology, as well as your AA through IHCC. Then of course there is the IHCC 2 yr program. Like Hawkeye CC, we also have classes in DT and firearms, as well as a patrol procedures class where we execute building searches and traffic stops. There are also different management, ethics, investigative and theory related classes. We also have a job fair for CJ students every fall where many local, state and federal reps come and talk to students/potential candidates.
